So for my field placement I chose the elementary school. And not just any elementary school, but a Jewish one. I'm starting to look forward to it, because I've always been interested in the Jewish faith.
I had wanted to do one of my placements at an elementary school, so I suppose it's for the best.
I think elementary school librarians/library technicians are important in the development of a kid's love of reading. I can still remember my librarian, Mr. Vanderdium. He was a giant, at least in my eyes, with a big scratchy beard who was always full of energy and excitement. I remember the way he used to read Dr. Seuss to us, just as wide eyed and happy as we were. I remember his chalkboard murals every winter, complex snowy scenes with horse drawn carriages and forests.
I also remember the year when they got the the computer, and we had to sign our own books out. It wasn't the same, having to wand in our own books with the cold, steel pen.
Along with the basic things I learned in elementary school, like the provinces, cursive writing, and the fact that sometimes you just need to shove others out of the way when you really want a swing, I'll remember Mr. Vanderdium and the love of literature he helped to foster in me.
