Movie of the Moment

Yes, another one! Maybe I'll make this a regular feature, showing the world various titles of my movie collection no matter how crappy and embarrassing.

Today's movie:

This came out in 1995, when I was 11. This was the first movie I saw in theatres without *gasp!* my parents. Well, it was either this or Gold Diggers: the Search For Big Bear Mountain. Either way it involves a pre-eating disorder Christina Ricci, and bad acting.

It has all the young girl stereotypes: Roberta [Ricci & Rosie O'Donnell] is the tomboy, Teeny [Thora Birch & Melanie Griffith] wants to be a star, Samantha [Gaby Hoffman & Demi Moore] is the smart one, and Chrissy [Ashleigh Aston Moore & Rita Wilson] is the fat girl. Yet another coming of age story!

It flips between the girls all grown, and their summer of 1970, mainly focusing on the events of that summer. Sam's parents are the first couple in Gaslight Edition suburb to be getting a divorce, Roberta contends with boys and her growing boobs, while Teeny has to live with her lack of boobage.

During a late night seance in the ol' cemetary, the girls think they've raised the ghost of "Dear Johnny", a 12 year old boy. Wanting to know what happened to him, they spend the summer trying find more information on poor Johnny. Along the way they have encounters with Crazy Pete, the town weirdo, a cynical 'Nam vet played by Brendon Fraser, and spy on some skinny dipping boys down at the watering hole. Mayhem people, MAYHEM!

Favourite quotes:

Chrissy's mom: " All women have a garden, and a garden needs a big hose to water it... or a small hose... as long as it works."

Teeny: Roberta, truth or dare?
Roberta: Truth.
Teeny: Just how big are your boobs now?
Roberta: Drop dead.
Teeny: She has to say, doesn't she, Sam?
Samantha: She doesn't have to say if she doesn't want to.
Teeny: Then can we see them?
Roberta: No, you can't see them!

Bully: Why don't you go home and play with your dolls?
Chrissy: The only doll Roberta's got is a G.I. Joe!

Samantha [voiceover]: Teeny's parents were country-clubbers that were never around - typical upbringing for actors and pathological liars.
