I picked up the paper this afternoon while eating my toasted tomato and roasted garlic hummus sandwich, and skimmed the headlines.
When I was at school, I sometimes picked up the Ottawa Citizen, or the Globe and Mail. I've always enjoyed the paper. The smell of newsprint, the inky fingers that go along with it. But I could never concentrate properly, I would glance over the headlines, turn the pages, and not pay attention. There were too many sections, too many news stories, and just too much information to take in.
But here, with the craptacular Sun Times, I read. The paper is usually around 10 pages, which makes it manageable and less time consuming.
I like to read the paper backwards. I start on the back of the very last page, and then work forward.
But today, I started at the beginning.
As I was scanning the front page, noticed the words "school closures" and "Victoria".
//What? Can they do that?!//
And apparently they can.
I didn't particularly enjoy public school, I was fragile kid [and others knew it]. But still, Victoria holds a lot of memories, and it's sad to see that it has to close. Not only did I go there, but so did my brother, and my father [back when it went all the way to grade 8].
I remember the creaky old uneven floors, small offices, and large classrooms. At least, they were large when I was 5-12, I don't know about now...and of course, I remember the library.
I suppose the old building will be knocked down, and apartments put up. Isn't that always the way?
